Hi there,

As I suggested a while ago I have decided not to renew my subscription to
the news server and I think it is about to expire.

I wish you all well. I will be on Twitter as @Lepimann

Sorry to read that, Bob. It has been interesting to read views on the
environment from someone not directly connected to agriculture.

I am still avoiding up to date communication systems. Even the *fora*
seem too frenetic for my comfort.

Thanks for that. I may just do it though in all honesty it has only cost
5 euros a year. I am mostly sad that there is so little traffic and so
much of what there is, is started by trolls.

I use news.individual.net as a newsreader, costs 8.43/year (10 euros) and I
see no spam or trolls on my newsgroups as they filter them out.

Bob
Bob, you can use the free NNTP server at news.aioe.org. Free to read and also to post. I've been using it for years
and it's been excellent.
No need to pay a thing :-)

Glad to hear it. Would be a shame to see you go.
Maybe we need to start posting some observations from our respective "patches" to keep this ng alive.

So, today in north Cumbria:
Large Red Damselflies have been on the wing for a week now.
Orange-tips, Green-veined White, Peacock and Small Tort on my transect this afternoon.
Whitethroat, Gropper and Garden Warblers have arrived and singing.
Still have Little Egrets on the Solway - would be nice to see them breeding here.
Lead-coloured Drab was the highlight of the last moth-trapping session on one of the local reserves where I trap. Can
only seem to find them beside one mature Aspen but have traps out tonight near some young Aspen stands. I have a
feeling they are only found in association with mature Aspen but we'll see.

There! It's a start.

Sorry Bob, it's shorthand for Grasshopper Warbler, same as Mipit is short for Meadow Pipit :-)

A dull day yesterday in coastal Essex but fond two webs of Small
Tortoiseshell caterpillars and 1 of Peacock. I heard the first Cuckoo and
Lesser Whitehroat.Blackcaps Whitethroat Chiffchaffs are well established.
I am still hoping for a Nightingale and a few Turtle Doves which have
pretty well gone in the last few years from here.

I expect Little terns any time.

Ah, Nightingales. I haven't heard one for years. When I was working down south I used to take time out of an evening
and go to Little Paxton just to sit quietly and listen to them. Lovely!
No Cuckoos here yet but one heard further south in Cumbria last week. Someone heard Lesser Whitethroat the other day.
Chiffchaff females arrived en masse last weekend with the good weather, and are nest-building now. Some female Willow
Warblers also arrived now.

Re, Willow Warblers are doing OK up here. I've just done a survey of a (roughly) 80ha site which is approx. 1/3
woodland of various ages and species, and have around 45 singing males. A significant proportion of these males will
not breed - lack of females.

There was a lot of activity on Usenet a while ago. The good thing about
Twitter is that you can follow whoever informs you. The weaker side is
that you don't tend to hear the opposing views very much, at least I don't
follow people who promote those views, so I rarely see them now.

Does your ISP give newsgroups? You could always subscribe (for free) via
them.

it will be a shame if you have to leave but we all make our own decisions.

Good luck for the future.

Bob,

It is possible to access Usenet newsgroups through Google Groups.

The three groups you sent your message to are at:

https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!forum/uk.business.agriculture

https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!forum/uk.environment.conservation

https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!forum/uk.rec.natural-history

You need a Google account to be able to post newsgroup messages via
Google. There is no charge for an account.

If you don't already have a Google account you can create one here:
https://accounts.google.com/SignUp?service=groups2&continue=https%3A%2F%2Fgroups.google.com%2Fforum%2F%3Fhl%3Den&hl=en

All the best for the future.

Can't get into Twitter, it makes little sense to me.

Usenet is just about dead and buried so I can understand the lack of
enthusiasm. One day it will reduce to two faint voices dissing each other on
